Write Every Day

everyday(image by Joseph Eastwood)The most consistent piece of advice I've heard from successful composers, screenwriters, authors and anyone else in a similar craft is to write every day. It's that simple. Write every single day no matter how "inspired" you feel. If you write crap, so be it, but at least you wrote something. If you feel great, even better! But it doesn't matter. What matters is that you write. If you can write every day, you turn your efforts from a sporadic struggle into a habit. You will be guaranteeing yourself that you will constantly be creative and prolific. So how do you ensure that you write every day? I'll confess that I still find it very difficult. But like any habit, there are techniques you can use. Scheduling a specific time and making writing part of a routine can help. I'm not a habit expert, so I'll send you off to someone who is. I'd recommend you start with "5 Steps to Create a New Habit" over at Zen Habits. Once you're there I'm sure you'll find many other great articles that will help get you on your way.Write every day and you will get better, period.
