Excellent point Bruce, composing the line is something that I don't value often enough! I hope you don't mind but I'm going to run with that idea on a future post :-)

Hi, Ryan. It's an interesting question you pose. I like the Hindemith lighting at night analogy. A little scary, really. I suspect some composers see and remember more of the details of the flash. Sometimes I see better than other times, in the dark after a flash of lightning. One of the things Robert Ward taught me was to first identify and compose the Line (of thought) that the listener was to follow from beginning to end and then go back and work out the details afterwards. So, to answer your question, I think I always use both techniques. Bruce

Thanks for the great advice. I've been assisting Jason Graves for a few years now and I'm always looking for new ways to make his work days easier. Keep up the great work!

I'm in Pro Tools 10 but as you said, it will work with any other version. It doesn't even have to be Pro Tools, just as long as it can slave to Logic and host video.

I have used this method on older versions of Pro Tools LE, the only thing to watch out for is I know some older versions don't have timecode and you have to calculate frames as beats and ticks which can be a little tedious.

Hey Ryan, this sounds like a really good idea...

What version of ProTools are you using for this? I am still on 8 (LE), but this would probably work with that version (I think).

Great article!

Hey Marc! I do it myself. Since I usually get one long cut of the film, the director doesn't usually even think of it as being in reels. I get one long file, and then I base my "reels" off of 20 minute chunks. I don't cut the film up into sections or anything, it's just based on the timecode.

Great article, Ryan. Simple and concise.

One question... do you break up the film into reels or does the director / editor do that for you?
